funding for community radio station, anyone got any good ideas??

hi guys

some of you may remember that from my other posts that I am part of a local community radio station.

we are in the middle of applying for funding from the lottery etc but I wondered if there was any other funding that anyone else could recommened or if anyone had any good fundrasing ideas??

We currently have no funds and its starrting to look bleak for us, the other local radio station closes at 6pm and broadcasts from another town so its not local news etc thats on the show. We want to get the community involved and be the voice for the borders.

thanks
vicky

Have you considered approaching several companies in the area. Asking them to sponsor the Radio station in some form.

I know that also Leith FM have on their board (another option...appointing a local businessman to the board).....a chap called Mike Stevenson who runs a business called DesignLinks. He brings to the radion station some business savvy and attracts other businesses to be involved.

Hi Vicky

You will probably have thought of some of the following, but sometimes applications for funding to different public and private sector bodies require a creative approach. They get thousands of funding applications and sometimes an application that can show a different angle or link to a in vogue theme can be successful.

Most of the following requires an 'imaginative leap' of faith but I know of a number of organisations who have used the 'creative and tenuous link' to good effect. Though without knowing a bit more about the station programming, content and potential advertising medium, it is difficult to guide you further..... but hopefully the following will maybe give you some ideas.

Grant Funding

On the 19th November 2008 Mr. John Swinney MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Sustainable Growth announced, as an aspect of encouraging economic growth, improved support for Business Improvement Districts in Scotland (BIDS) with an increase in the grant available to business groups and associations, working in partnership with their local authority, to develop proposals for Business Improvement Districts across Scotland.

The grant is a single payment and no further financial support would be provided by the Scottish Government.

It is expected that the grant will be available throughout this financial year.

Funding for the development of Business Improvement Districts is limited and whilst all applications will be considered, it is inevitable that some will not proceed to grant or may fail to meet the assessment criteria.

Please download both the 'enquiries letter ' and 'application form ', which give further details on the application process and requirements in respect of the grant.

A sample application is available for download here.

If you have any questions you should contact;

Ian Davison Porter Project Director BIDS e-mail [email protected]his e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it.

# In respect of the above.....let's say you could run a series of programmes at a specific time slot that invited secondary pupils from your local high school to join a 'speakeasy' with a local councillor, business leaders and community groups to discuss what initiatives could be employed by the local authority to look at environmental or re cycling or town centre clean ups, or anything that attracts tourism to the area etc .......'wouldn't that be good for the local business district improvement etc'

If you applied the same thought process I'm sure it would be worth trying a similar approach with the following.

Historic Scotland

Historic Scotland provides a number of grant and funding schemes to support bodies and individuals in the protection, education and promotion of the historic environment.

Details of their funding programmes can be found by clicking here.

Climate Challenge Fund

The Climate Challenge Fund is being supported by an alliance of partners from key organisations and networks throughout Scotland, who bring expertise and experience of community-level interventions.

The Sustainable Development Commission Scotland (SDC) is coordinating the work of this alliance. The alliance has three roles:

to develop a shared sense of purpose amongst national stakeholder bodies in supporting the purpose and delivery of the Climate Challenge Fund to provide a network where communities and stakeholders and businesses) can exchange good practice and learning
to support Government work on evaluation of actions by CCF communities in tackling climate change.

For more information go to Keep Scotland Beautiful

p.s. I'm sure you see where I'm going with the suggestions above but in these economic times with funding being stretched then the 'dare to be different' approach can often become the catalyst for change.

Hope this gives you some thought provoking and brilliant ideas in support of your fundraising effort.

John

Re: funding for community radio station, anyone got any good idea

Hi Vicky,

If it's the station I think it is, then I tuned in a few weeks ago during the day. I was surprised to hear no presenter, but just an auto-pilot playlist being played. More so, there was some random Super Mario techno music blasting out the speakers.

Is this in tune with your target audience?

Rather than looking for grants, have you looked at local businesses to support you in return for advertising on the station (both on the site and audio imaging)?

What's your Unique Listening Point? Why should the community tune in to your station, rather than setting up a playlist of music and listening to that?

Could you VT a show for during the day if other work commitments take precedent?

I think the key for generating a substantial revenue for your station is to create a wide listener base. At the moment, I'd be surprised (from what I heard on the day I tuned in) that many people chose to stay listening to it.

I really don't mean to put you or the station down, but I really feel that the playlists need tweaked a bit, and presenters during the day would be a great benefit.

Re: funding for community radio station, anyone got any good idea

hi john

many thanks for taking the time to reply, certainly gave me a lot to think about and I have passed your comments onto the statio manager who also says thanks.

Stuart, we currently have no presenters for the day time and due to work commitments and the location of the radio station and no funding, at the moment its just not possible to have presenters on during the day.

As for the playlists, I'll pass the comments onto the radio manager and see what he says as well as your other comments.

Thanks

Hi Vicky,

I dont know about the others but I could really do with understanding a bit more about how this type of radio station works , what it's aims are and it's challenges. I've noted a few questions below:-

How do you broadcast and to what area?
What are the typical running costs?
What's the main aims of the station?
What type of format is it. Talk only, Talk & Music, Music only?

:)

Can I go for a guess at 's questions - just to see how accurate my figures are in my head nowadays:

Broadcast for the station is via the Internet only at this time, although I'm pretty confident they'll be looking into other avenues of broadcast (probably pushing for an FM community licence?)

The running costs for an Internet station will be roughly £2000 per annum. Included in that is your server costs, bandwidth costs, and broadcast licences for PRS/MCPS, PPL, etc. The presenters will be volunteers on an unpaid basis most likely.

Vicky,
It might be an idea to get presenters to Voice Track their daytime shows the night before? I understand that it might be difficult to find those willing, but if the station goes in the direction you guys are hoping, it's something really good to have on a presenters CV.
