As many of you know, April brings a number of changes to UK Employment Law which will impact employers across the country.

Of the many changes heading your way in April, one of the most significant ones being introduced is the introduction of a new 'Fit Note' scheme, offically know as "Statement of Fitness for Work".

This change, which takes place from 6 April 2010, means GPs will no longer issue sick lines but will instead issue fit notes outlining for employers what duties they believe the employee can undertake and what support the employer can provide to help the employee return to work.

The thinking is this scheme will help Employers to reduce long-term staff absence as it will facilitate a quicker return to work for many employees who would've otherwise have remained off work thus saving Employers millions of pounds.

Whilst this may prove to be the case for many large companies who currently pay their staff company sick pay and have scope to bring staff back on 'light duties', many are asking how this might impact smaller firms who only pay statutory sick pay and have less flexibility to accomodate returning staff?

What do you think?

Is this a positivie move or will this create even more pressure for small businesses?

Its important that Employers seek Employment Law Advice and general support from an HR Services company to avoid potential problems and help:

  • Understand the changes and the benefits of the new fit note scheme
  • Get training for you and/or your managers to handle difficult conversations in the workplace
  • Use mediation to resolve conflict and help people get back to work
