Does 'remarketing' Work?

I've read a lot recently about 'remarketing' - that is, targeting ads at previous visitors to your website. Has anyone tried this and seen any success from it?

I'm not sure if this is directly related, but studies have shown that if you advertise to one group of people, you will get a 50% bonus if you advertise to the exact same people again.

For example if you post 10,000 leaflets you may get 100 enquiries, and if you leaflet that exact same 10,000 people you will still get another 50 next time around.

Yes.

People who have bought from you in the past are much more likely to buy from you than someone who hasn't. And someone who has visited your website is more likely to buy than someone who has never visited your site.

UNfortunately, I don't keep aggregated stats of how remarketing has performed for all my clients, so I can't give you a comparison.
