Business Grants

Hi folks...

Although I am in the process of getting myself established in business already, I would be able to grow quicker and achieve more if I were to find some suitable funding.

I am in the Moray region covered by Highlands & Islands Enterprise (HIE) who to the best of my knowledge ended all business startup grants with effect from April this year. I believe they have even handed the provision of startup and business advice to regional councils (not much use!).

This leaves me looking for answers for two questions...

1] If the don't offer funding or advice, how enterprising are HIE?

and more importantly...

2] Can anybody recommend some well recognised and reliable sources of business startup/development grants (even better if they specialise in IT/New Media)?

Regards,

Gordon

Hi Gordon,

I've posted a link to Business Gateway below who still have a very good area on their website all about grants.

Grants and government support | bgateway.com

I think it's also fair to mention that whilst in the past you used to be able to get some money just for startin up this is not the case any more. Most of the grants now tend to be focussed on areas where there are high growth potential and employment or for R&D.

Personally it's not the way I would do things but hey what do I know :) I'm sure other people will come along with other suggestions.

Hi There,

Some useful grant portals are on Business Grant, Loan, Venture Capital, Tax Relief and Award Information for businesses in the UK - j4bGrants.co.uk. They will profile your business across about 4500 European and UK grants. The ones that they identify will have to be filtered down to ones that fit but the site does save a lot of time.

Also, you may wish to consider other sources of funding:

- Loans
- Sponsorship
- Angels

Your core area is a prime area of interest for HIE and Scottish Entreprise so you may get access to some R&D style grants.

Hope this helps.
