I see the BBC has launched a public consultation on whether a set top box could be used to access the iPlayer etc. I've read elsewhere that this box could cost up to £200 but it could also develop to hold content from many other sources.

I'm actually quite surprised the BBC are showing such vision in this case as it's only a matter of time before most content could be accessed via the internet.

BBC's Project Canvass plans : Industry News : News : BCS

So what do you think? Is this a good idea or is it doomed to failure?

It's all about the way things are marketed to punters isn't it?
Rather than saying "A fully functioning computer that lets you access the internet on your T.V. and download whatever video streams are available"...

Market it as: "A BBC iPlayer box which also holds content from many other sources" and people go "ooh!"

For average Joe who doesn't want to have to go through the hassle of building their own exceptional media centre, yeah, the BBC box might be fantastic. But as someone who loves control, I'd probably look at the costs involved of making my own.

I wonder if their box will be HD?
