Are there any formal apprenticeship schemes?

I remember the days when "I was a lad" there used to be apprenterships for a lot of professions then they were replaced by the YTS - cheap labour and little or no prospect of a job at the end of it. All done to keep the "unemployment" figures down. I wonder if the people who created these schemes ever think of the damage they have done for generations later?
