Many people enter business to do what they do best. This could be anything, perhaps plumbing, web development or anything, the list is endless. During the growth of a business many are adverse to taking on new staff as it will increase costs, as well as hiring accountants etc. What people fail to realise is that the only way to make your business grow is get enough business so that you have to delegate tasks, and employ staff.

Having experience that you gain as a sole trader will help you develop managerial skills down the line, and it is important you have some knowledge of everything, but this shouldn't be a roadblock to setting aside tasks you previously handles yourself and focus more on delegation and management, as this is the only way you can groqw in the long run.

I see being a sole trader as being the first step of many on a career ladder, if the effort is put in to expand the business. Unfortunately I know I could probably work harder, and that if I up my game I could probably make a lot more money as a bit of an agency, but with such a busy life it's quite difficult.

The reality is that nobody can carry out all of the tasks required to run and grow a business - getting bogged down with non-income creating tasks can seriously impact your profits. The term "Jack of all trades, master of none" springs to mind :)

The E-Myth is a good read and imho essential for new businesses in the "I'm a good practitioner, I'll start my own business" group of people.

Hi @RedEvo Glad to have you back on the forum. I am really excited to see how it grows in the future as there are no forums specifically for Scottish Businesses.

Mark,

Good to see if coming back to life. I'm a big believer in forums as a source of help for business owners. Let me know if I can help :)

PS - Could you change the title of this thread to use the words Aversion and Outsourcing :)

Hi @RedEvo

Thanks for your post and comments. It would be great if you could post your views and comments on the forum when you have time. I am like you, I think forums are still very important. The info is indexed on Google which allows people to search for all kinds of business information and advice. I prefer a forum over social media - although I appreciate there is a need to also maintain a social media presence.

Above all there is not a focused business forum for Scottish businesses which I was amazed at - but there is now, Scottish Business Forums has risen from the dead :)

p.s. I tried to change the heading of the thread but it is not possible.

Absolutely, you've hit the nail on the head. Many entrepreneurs start their businesses driven by their expertise in a particular field, be it plumbing, web development, or any other area. While it's natural to be cautious about increasing costs by hiring staff or accountants, it's essential to recognize that growth often necessitates delegation.
