Sorry but...

Who are SE?

Why are Avanti in this?

What was point 2 of their T&C's

What are Avanti's objections?

Why are they objecting?

Am I missing something here....

Just as a test, I visited your website and put your phone number into BT's broadband checker - you're obviously not a BT customer!

OOps sorry about that - so many interruptions whilst making this post - its a subject that has been going back and forwards for the last two weeks - so forgetting some of you will not know any of the history.

Who are SE? Scottish Executive - not enough space in the heading to get this in!
http://www.broadbandforscotland.co.uk

Why are Avanti in this? They are Scottish Executive's chosen supplier for the Roll Out

What was point 2 of their T&C's - That if you use Avanti's Satellite service you cannot connect your/their Broadband to your Small Business Server - so you cannot work remotely (or access your own server when away) Anyone using another Broadband supplier cannot access your Server - i.e. any form of remote assistance

What are Avanti's objections? - see above

Why are they objecting? It is the 2nd item in their Terms & Conditions - they imply that if do you do connect a Server and allow dial up users to connect they have no control over the flow of the amount of data - I imagine that you might be using more than your designated bandwidth?

Avanti

Ah!

Those T&C's are very restrictive but there may be some way's around them....

Have you considered some high gain wireless aerials so that you and your ladies can connect wirelessly more reliably?

How far away from the Wireless router are you?

Can you describe the setup at the moment? (ie you, your ladies and the next house along)

Avanti's data tells us that instead of the Microsoft Small Business server we would have to use VPN and we would need a VPN accelerator - which seems to cost about $1000 from the USA...Avanti say that although you would need one they would not support it!

Currently my own wireless connection to the last ADSL 1/4 mile away as the crow and signal fly works well enough except when inexplicably it stops and then despite anyones best attempts you are powerless to do anything - best solution seems to leave it overnight and hey presto with luck it is back. This is using Breezenet equipment which is probably several years out of date, but was Rolls Royce in its day!

We have a scheme all mapped out which was to get the BT signal (probably 3 or 4 lines bonded to = 2MB) further back down the lochside up to me and then for me to redistribute this to those across the loch and my immediate neighbours by a cheaper form of wireless. Some 25/30 can all see me.

However as a result of HIE/SE's persuasion to get all those who had not got BB registered we now have some 38 listed and some of those are in groups that would require additional booster stations.

Meantime I took on the old TV Relay masts 100 metres or so up the moor from me - I have mainatained the elctricity supply to these two masts against the contingincy they might be needed to boost the signal whatever. We could have done it all for about

Have you had a look at:

Tariam Homenet

or

Fast.co.uk | The UK's highest rated ISP for Support & Customer Service | Fixed Satellite Broadband

and

Fast.co.uk | The UK's highest rated ISP for Support & Customer Service | Satellite Grants

If there is enough interest in your community then you could easily share the setup and monthly costs between yourselves.

Set the dish etc up on the old mast, whack a couple of high gain directional wifi aerials to broadcast the wireless signal to the neighbours and everyone should be happy...

Before BT decided to put broadband in my old village of East Linton this is exactly what we did. It worked like a dream and had a usable range of approx 1 mile from the mast.
