I can sort of understand why Microsoft don't allow an in-place upgrade from XP to 7. But I don't understand why they then offer it as an option on the first screen you see when you load the Windows 7 CD. Why give the user a choice only to tell them that their choice wasn't valid.
It's also interesting that they refer to a custom install as "advanced".

Yep bit of a NO brainer really. Giving people options that don't actually work.
I once saw a guy on a training course I was on trying to setup Server Clustering in Server 2003 STD Edition. He was at it for hours.
The option for setup etc is there and it goes through the motions, even trying to communicate with other servers.
However on careful inspection of the documentation, Server Clustering IS NOT supported in the Standard Edition.
MS just didn't remove it from the menu.
I like the terms "upgrade" and "Custom Install (Advanced)" when in reality they really mean we will help you dump your documents to a USB drive while you wipe / format your PC. Later we can help you put your documents back on.
