BBC NEWS | Technology | Video screens hit paper magazines

Quite an intersting little video above about a magazine who have managed to put a small video screen inside their magazine. It seems pretty obvious that printed media does need to innovate to succeed and while I think this looks pretty cool it seems to have alot of negative points as well.

Take a quick look at the video (less than 2 minutes!) and let us all know your thoughts. :)

As they say, imagine it and it will become reality.

The device as we see it here is in very crude form. What you're seeing here is something built out of components designed primarily for other purposes. And though conceptually sound, really just a prototype. Many of the negatives are simply reflections of that...

Produced on a suitable scale there's little to stop the circuitry being built into a flexible substrate no thicker than a single piece of stiff card, and at a unit cost of perhaps 20p per item. In principal you're looking at a highly viable alternative to lenticular printing in terms of bulk, environmental impact and perceived value by the end user.

The creative applications are huge; and the roll out you see here can be compared to Baird's demonstrating mechanical television back in 1925. It proves the point (and that IS the point of it),but ultimately doesn't even come close to where the medium is destined to travel.

This WILL get better, cheaper, more viable, and more common.

I really like it, but I agree with the chap who complained that you can't fold it and put it in your pocket! :) As Matt says though this is a crude version of what will come in the future and I for one am quite excited about the possibilities that a product like this can offer.
