Afternoon all,

I have just come across this fantastic site, Spotify ? A world of music. Instant, simple and free whilst reading about the pirate bay verdict on the BBC website.

Essentially it is Napster but free, you can stream as much music as you like and the only cost is adverts displayed on the system.

You can purchase tracks as well.

Quite impressed actually!

Also the download speed is fantastic, there is no delay from clicking play on a tracks.

All you need to do it to sign up for a free account, download and install the software, sign in and away you go!

Great stuff like!

I've used it for a while, and it's absolutely fantastic :) The only downside is the adverts - so I couldn't use it if I had people round for a party, etc.

Having said that though, it's brilliant. Still missing a few fantastic tracks, but I'm sure they'll get them on there soon.
I'm tempted to pay the monthly fee for the no ads version.

What I've thought about recently though, is the way in which the music is delivered. The good thing is that you don't have to download the actual files to your computer, so you don't have to have a big hard drive. The downside though, is that you can't take the files with you on your ipod.

Do they not do a streamed version for iPhone/Blackberry? That would be the answer! I use a service called FlyCast as a radio on my Blackberry, gives me the chance to listen to my personal favourite station from the States...

[put on your cheesiest american accent and say this out loud!]

"98 Rock - Californias Rock Station"

All puns pardoned it rocks! ;)

Thanks for posting that info, Tom.

I have to say that I'm put off any site that requires you to tell it your email address, postcode, date of birth, etc, before they tell you how the site works or what the benefits are. But I'm happy to trust your judgement as to its value.

I used to use Pandora, which sounds like what you are describing, but with no adverts. Unfortunately, they pulled the plug on non-US listeners.

I've been looking into Spotify for a while now to see if it could be used for music in the shop. However after speaking with the company behind the software it seems that it's only licensed for personal use, even if I had the appropriate PRS/PPL licensing.

Pity.

HI Mike,

I believe they use your postcode to filter the content as some of the content is only available in certain countries.

But its a great service.

I've been listening all afternoon and i've heard 2 adverts in 4 hours.

Not too bad!

it does say in the FAQ that it is only for personal use and not for public or business use.

But its a great wee service, for free as well!

The adverts certainly seemed to be more proilific in the beginning.

I don't care anyway, I think it's brilliant, not enough Marissa Nadler on there, but you can't have everything.

I use last.fm on the iphone, but I saw a demo of spotify recently so I expect there'll be an app coming along soon.

Fair enough, but why ask for your date of birth etc?

Actually, it's not that I object to giving this information. My point was that they shouldn't ask for it without at least telling you the reason. And no site should make people go through a registration process just to find out what the site offers.

Also, I strongly suspect they use your IP address rather than your postcode to determine your country. I know Pandora does that. After all, they can verify an IP address -- perhaps not with 100 percent certainty, but more so than a postcode.

Re: Spotify...

It's great, real shame that it can't be used in a business or other commercial premises to supply music.

I have, for the first time, used the merge feature!

Gordon started a duplicate Spotify thread in the non-business chat area, but Tom had already started a thread here.

Spotify is brilliant - until you let people who share an office with you choose the music you're having to listen to whilst working :p

Another vote from me, been using it for a couple of months now. Although I really can't see how they can keep the model going as it works at the moment unless loads of people use the subscription service. As a free user you can avoid ever hearing an advert by just swapping song before one ends.
