Hey all,

Ok so i'm a computer person, i'm quite cautious when it comes to most stuff, i have anti virus, anti-spyware and always look for encryted secure connections when using online banking and shopping online.

This article on BBC has got me thinking:

BBC NEWS | Technology | Tackling the hackers face-to-face

/Stu could we start a section in the blog about safe internet usage with tips tricks and links to software and stuff?

What does everyone else think?

It is scary! I use IRC all the time, and I've never thought about going onto any of those channels.

Remember though, that if you do go onto one of those channels, there's a good chance a flag will pop up at your ISP alerting them, and they'll likely pass on your details to the polis.

I think your idea for some articles on the blog regarding this is a good one Tom. We have an IT and Technology section where these would fit perfectly :)

Criminals in this area are probably one step ahead of the authorities. I think online is being exploited more and more due to the impact chip and pin has had. I would never dream of using a site like IRC but I also think that local authorities and the police should invest much more in tackling these sort of crimes.

I doubt very much that major ISPs are checking all data flowing through ports 6667-7000 (IRC)...It's likely you could join and partake without being noticed by your ISP.
But that's not the point. Anyone trying to use these details over their home internet line will have the police round in days.

If you live in countries outwith juristiction like Romiania however it's able to happen. The countries have to be forced to get involved to see this eliminated.
Personally I don't see why Visa/MasterCard/Other Issuers don't say you sort this out or we remove our services from your Countries. They are the ones that are supposed to be providing the service! They have the right to remove per problematic retailer why not per problematic country. That would force them to crack down on it or loose credit card services.
It's a no brainer!
