Guide To Buying Coffee For Staff

Guide To Buying Coffee For Staff

business food and drink

Did you know that 43 percent of your staff members drink coffee to start their day, and many continue to drink it all day long? Actually, after water, coffee is the second most consumed beverage in the world.

With over 90 million cups drunk every day in the United Kingdom, coffee has always been an important part of our daily beverage routine. And one must ask: how does coffee, for most of us, retain its crown as a staple drink?

Many of us will react “because coffee gives us the boost of energy and alertness.” While most of us recognise that caffeine has the general ability to activate us and increase our focus, what exactly makes coffee do that to us?

We’ll need to learn about how the caffeine in coffee affects the body to address this adequately, so here goes.

Coffee And Productivity

Neurons in the brain are firing away every waking moment. They create something called adenosine, a chemical compound in the brain called a purine nucleoside, while they operate.

There are a few different adenosine receptors that we all have in our body, but there is one that seems to be very closely related to caffeine, which is called the A1 receptor.

It goes to the A1 receptor when we drink caffeine from a regular cup of coffee and impersonates it. The body recognises it as its own because caffeine is so close to adenosine and then binds with these receptors.

What happens from here, in simple words, is that they become blocked, and the brain no longer creates its own dopamine and glutamate; instead, coffee takes over the role!

This is good on the one side because when you get exhausted and need a rest, caffeine will prevent the brain from coming to a halt. As an adenosine receptor imposter, caffeine comes in and begins creating its own stimulants.

People drink coffee as a sure-fire way of jump-starting their day. While other coffee drinkers use their cup of coffee to carry them through an energy slump or while at work to remain on assignment. So if you’re busy typing and thinking on the keyboard, or doing manual work out and about, drinking a regular cup of joe will keep you going for longer.

What Are The Best Coffees For The Office?

Different abilities and methods of brewing will influence our coffee accordingly. Having the most caffeine possible is the target for many people. Others want the right taste, and between these extremes, many find a perfect marriage.

Every employee has interests of their own. You want to know the choices available for having your office coffee (and even experiment a bit). There are hundreds, if not thousands, of forms of coffee to be tried by drinkers. We have rounded up the top 14 different types of coffee drinks in your workplace that you can easily make available!

1. Espresso

espresso machines

This is the best way to improve your performance, as it provides an immediate boost and can last several hours! The basis and most critical part of each espresso-based drink is the espresso (aka “short black”). Espresso is the purest coffee drink you can have, and while they aren’t for everybody when you find a decent brew, it can be a truly special drinking experience.

2. Caffè Americano

americano coffee

An American is nothing but a single espresso diluted with hot water to make a mouth-wateringly tasty black coffee, add milk and hey presto you have a white coffee. It’s a great booster for productivity too!

It was said that during the Second World War, American soldiers would make this form of coffee last longer to make their drinks last. It was then (apparently) embraced after the war by American baristas.

3. Café Latte (or Café au lait)

latte coffee

For coffee drinkers and for those who are not daily coffee drinkers, this is a fairly common choice. Lattes are made with foamed milk, helping to conceal the coffee’s bitterness. Lattes contain one or two shots of espresso with the milk poured over it (depending on how strong the employees want it), making a frothy drink that everyone will enjoy.

4. Cappuccino

The cappuccino has several layers to it, giving it extra flavour and texture, one of the most popular choices when it comes to coffee. The first layer consists of espresso, giving you the kick of caffeine, accompanied by a shot of steamed milk to counter the taste of bitter coffee, topped by a layer of foamy milk to make it easy to drink. A sprinkling of cinnamon or chocolate powder is also topped off with cappuccinos, giving the workers a small sugar hit as well, ideal for those early mornings.

5. Mochaccino

Mochaccino coffee

A ‘mocha’ is just an espresso with added chocolate powder or syrup, another go-to option for first-time coffee drinkers (sometimes being topped with whipped cream). This is a decent entry-level coffee, if anything, residing in the worlds between the childlike hot chocolate and the adult latte café. Although it will depend on how much sweet stuff the workers want, they will have to choose between a mocha and a latte.

6. Flat White

flat white coffee

Long black and flat white are the two most available Kiwi coffees since both originated in New Zealand and Australia. Steamed milk is poured into a cup containing a shot of espresso, and this creates a flat white (which is typically not so frothy, but more creamy). It is now common among workers who are trying desperately to stay awake and motivated. (It’s one of my personal favourites)

7. The Long Black

the long black coffee

Boiled water is poured into a cup, and that water is poured into two shots of espresso. If you do the opposite, this will lead to an Americano (no. 2). Long blacks can have more creamy foam than an American and can be very powerful. A great booster of productivity for busy workers!

8. Macchiato

Macchiato coffee

This fabulous drink – The Macchiato – is a shot of espresso that is then topped off directly in the cup with foamed milk. While it may sound similar to a cappuccino, as there is no steamed milk added, it is typically stronger and much smaller, usually served in an espresso sized cup.

9. Caramel Macchiato

Caramel Macchiato coffee

This one is certainly one of the tastiest of all the various forms of coffee drinks. It has a rich taste that is truly second to none. One of the best coffees to try is the caramel macchiato if you’re someone who likes extra-sweet drinks.

10. Bulletproof Coffee

Bulletproof Coffee

A drink that mixes coffee, oil, and butter is bulletproof coffee. This creamy coffee has a similar look to a latte when served hot. It usually combines 1 to 2 tablespoons of unsalted, grass-fed butter with a cup of black coffee and 1 to 2 tablespoons of something called medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil, a form of fat that is easily digested.

The method behind the recipe is to provide energy for a balanced, non-jittery boost that lasts for hours through the coffee and essential fats to the brain. So this mix is certainly worth considering in order to tackle mental fatigue in your workplace!

11. Vienna

The Vienna coffee consists of two espresso shots, with whipped cream added into the drink instead of standard milk and sugar, and is a great choice for those workers who need a quick caffeine hit, as well as enjoying something sweet. Sometimes topped with chocolate sprinkles, regardless of the weather, Vienna is a good office beverage.

12. Affogato

Affogato Coffee

If your workers are looking to get coffee and ice cream, why not get them with an affogato at the same time? Another thing that you must try is this Italian coffee-based dessert. This coffee packs the rich texture of the coffee with the vanilla ice-cream, paired with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and an added shot of espresso on top.

13. Cold Brew Coffee

Cold-brew coffee first made an appearance in smaller coffee shops around the country and soon became one of the trendiest coffee drinks now on the market and soon became a favourite among coffee aficionados.

It is infused with nitrogen gas with tiny holes released through a pressurised valve. The high pressure forces the cold brew past a disk, producing in the cold brew a creamy, stout-like appearance. It’s smooth like an iced latte, but dairy-free and for a regular 12-ounce drink it has only five calories.

14. Irish Coffee

Owing to the alcohol content, this one is a little different. This kind of coffee is brewed with whiskey, sugar, and a thick layer of cream on top if you want to go extra for your workers. For a cold winter evening when working on some menial office work, Irish coffee can be a delicious option and the perfect drink.

Buying Food and Drink From A Coffee Shop

If you don’t want to go down the route of installing a coffee machine or buying a range of high quality luxury coffees then why not set targets for your team to hit and in return they get to order food and drink from or even get a fully paid visit to a coffee shop.

Ordering from a coffee shop like Starbucks, Costa Coffee or a local coffee shop is a great treat and one that you’re staff members will surely appreciate.

What Coffee or Coffee Maker To Buy For Your Business?

Coffee machines like pod machines, espresso machines, automatic coffee machines, coffee sachets or regular supplies of cold coffee ready-made in the fridge can be a perfect addition to the office environment if workers drink coffee because they love the taste or are looking for an energy boost, providing a variety of flavours and types. Quality coffee can be seen by workers as a symbol that their business cares about the well-being of employees.

Some workplaces, however, do only provide a drip coffee maker. Ok, and guess what? It may impact overall efficiency in the workplace. Employees try to find more desirable alternatives when there are few coffee choices at the workplace. During the workday, this can decrease productivity and reduce the amount of time workers spend in the workplace.

Providing a choice of high-quality coffee would keep workers in the office, thus improving their productivity. Employees are simply more happy and efficient if their favourite coffee types are right at their fingertips!

Is Coffee For Staff Tax Deductible?

The costs of supplying products in the workplace, such as tea and coffee, are allowed as a business expense, provided that all workers have access to them. Costs can also be claimed as a business expense for drinks and meals when travelling away from the workplace for business purposes.
